Learning Arabic to Understand the Quran? Where Do I Start?
The Arabic language is composed of different sciences [1] Nahw and [2] Sarf and art [3] Balaghah.
Nahw
Nahw is grammar. In Nahw you will learn the most foundational knowledge of Arabic grammar. You will learn the grammatical characteristics of nouns, verbs, prepositions, fragmented phrases and basic complete sentences.
Balaghah
Balaghah means rhetoric. It is an art that deals with the eloquence of the Arabic language and how to convey proper meanings according to the situation so that it can have a deep impact to the listeners.
Sarf
Sarf is the study of morphology. That's just a fancy way of saying word structure, word patterns, and how words are formed! It's super fun and will increase your understanding of Quranic words exponentially!
So, Where To Begin? Nahw, Sarf or Balaghah?
Starting your Arabic Journey with sarf is arguably the best strategy for non-Arabs. In fact this is the way Arabic is still taught in Turkey, India, Pakistan and other non Arab Muslim countries.
Learning basic sarf will assist the person in understanding how words are formed, and different word patterns. Additionally, Sarf is one of the best ways to learn vocabulary!

Arabic Root Letters
You will learn to identify root letters of Arabic words and, from those letters, create hundreds of other words. From this knowledge, you wouldn't need to learn vocabulary for hundreds of words; only that for the root letters.
Core Word Patterns
You will learn the various ways of forming words and, from those core patterns, figure out if a word is a past tense or present tense fi'l, if it's active or passive, if it's a person or place.
How To Use An Arabic Dictionary
You will learn to navigate your way through an Arabic dictionary and exponentially increase your Quran vocabulary.
Irregular Word Patterns
You will learn to identify irregular word patterns that are very commonly found in the Quran.
How To Derive Isms
You will learn how to derive Isms from the root letters and the Fi’l conjugation.
Complex Sentence Structures
You will learn some complex sentence structures that are used in the Quran.
Arabic Hacks
You will learn Arabic hacks that will help you decipher word patterns and enable you to see connections between words.

Meet Your Instructor:
Ustadh Wasif Khan
Wasif Khan's keen interest of the Quran has led him to teach Arabic to more than 7,000 students through online and offline courses. In 2010, Wasif enrolled in the Quranic Arabic Dream Program where he was among the top graduates of its first year. While working full-time, Wasif taught a 1-year Quranic Arabic Program for Islamic Learning Foundation in Chicago. In 2014 Wasif graduated from the Qalam Institute's 1-year Islamic Studies Program. Thereafter, he founded the Access Online Quranic Arabic course.
In 2018, Wasif obtained his MBA from SMU in Dallas. Currently, he lives in Dallas, Texas with his wife and three kids.
